Check and reset (delete) a student's quiz attempt

If a student has reported that they experienced technical difficulties whist undertaking a quiz, you may need to re-set their attempt so they can take the test again.

In some instances a student may not have submitted their quiz correctly within the allotted time period. In this case, their attempt will still be in progress and will need to be checked and closed before you can decide whether to allow the student to re-sit the quiz.

It is important to remember that a student's attempt may still be 'in progress' if they are genuinely in middle of doing the quiz. For this reason it is best to double check before re-setting an attempt

Note  If a student's attempt is still in progress and they have gone over the allotted time they can still submit the test themselves provided the close date and time for the quiz has not been reached - they cannot change or save any questions - simply submit the quiz. If the overall close date and time for the quiz has been reached only staff can submit a student's attempt that is still in progress

Only people with Unit Chair access can delete attempts.

  1. Click on Assessments and select Quizzes in the top navigation bar.

  2. Click on the drop-down arrow to the right of the quiz title, and select Grade from the list.

  5. Enter the student's name in the Search For field.

The student might have completed an attempt or their attempt might still be 'in progress' so it is best to keep the restrictions fairly open.

    • when they saved each response (if at all)
    • if their response was correct or incorrect

  4. If you are after additional information click on the link to the Quizzes Event Log near the top of the attempt window which will open a pop-up window and show:

    • the order in which actions were taken during the test
    • which questions were saved
    • if they they navigated to the next page
    • if they went out of the quiz and re-entered it at any time
    • if they exceeded the time limit
    • if they chose to 'okay' both of the quiz submission confirmation screens or only the first.

It is at the end of the Quizzes Event Log that your name will be recorded if you have had to close the test for the student.

If you are not quite sure how to best to interpret an event log please contact Health EDU

Important  If all questions in the quiz are automatically graded by the system, e.g. MCQs, the score for the quiz attempt will automatically be pushed through to the Grade Item. Deleting a student's quiz attempt does not delete the score for the Grade Item for that student.

If the student submits another quiz attempt then the score in the Grade Item will be updated. In the event the student does not re-attempt the quiz the score will remain, meaning you will may need to manually delete the score in the Grade item for the student.

Below is a view of the Grade Item for a Quiz and shows four students in various stages of quiz attempt submission.

Health 04 is an example of a student whose quiz attempt has been deleted from the Quizzes area. Here you can see that there is no icon in the Submission column but a score remains in the Grade column. For further information regarding the input and alteration of grades can be found by clicking on the icon in the Event Log column.

If the quiz availability period is still going, the student will be able to re-take the quiz without any further steps on your part, except for informing the student.

If the quiz availability period has passed, you will now need to provide the student with 'special access' to the quiz.
