Marking and grading quiz attempts

The below will show you how to mark quiz attempts requiring manual grading such as long-answer, paragraph and essay questions as well as how to release the scores to students once set as graded.

Important  If you need to correct or re-grade an automatically graded question type such as an MCQ or T/F please contact Health EDU
This is particularly important if the questions have been delivered in a quiz already attempted by students. There are a number of critical factors that need to be addressed as well as a few tips for the easy re-grading of all attempts of the question in one go.

1. Check that scores are hidden

Before marking attempts and setting them as graded you should first ensure that scores won't immediately be visible to students. Both the Submission View of the Quiz and the visibility of the Grade Item need to be checked.

2. Search and filter by user and graded status

There are a number of ways to search for and filter information in the grading area. If part of a marking team this can be particularly important as you will need to locate your own set of students to mark amongst many other students and markers.

This video will show you how to run a basic search using filters, as well as search by Student name, Group (e.g. marking group) and by Section (e.g. campus location or class such as IKE).

3. Mark and grade the attempts

The timing of the steps below may differ depending on how your Unit Chair wishes to deal with the marking and grading of attempts. For example, the Unit Chair may be happy for attempts to be set as Graded as soon as they are marked - or they may wish to wait until the end of the marking process and set all attempts as Graded themselves.

  1. Click on Assessments then Quizzes in the top navigation bar.

  2. In the Quiz List refer to the numbers in the G column (G = Graded and the values refer to the number of attempts graded vs the number of attempts submitted).

  3. Click on the drop-down arrow next to the title of the quiz and select Grade.

  4. image

  5. You will be taken to the Users tab which is the default view.

  6. Students whose attempt has not been marked or set as graded will be missing a score, overall grade and tick in the far right column.

  7. Tip  If you want to filter by attempts that have been completed but still ungraded, refer to the steps under Filtering by graded and un-graded attempts section above.

  8. Choose a student and click on the attempt 1 link under their name.

  9. image

  10. A new screen will open displaying the student's attempt i.e. which questions were delivered, how they answered (if at all) and when they saved each response (if at all).

  11. Take a note of the score in the number in the Final Score field - you'll see how this number is updated further on in the process. Remember, if the quiz also contained MCQs these will already been auto-graded by the system.

  12. image

  13. Locate the first question requiring grading and review it.

  14. Enter the mark into the Score field.

  15. If you wish, feedback can be left for the student by typing into the comments boxes however please note:

You can enter feedback for a question by expanding each of the 'question feedback' areas but ONLY do so if you are willing to allow students to see how they answered each question.
While this is not such an issue for quizzes made up entirely of long-answer questions; it may pose problems for quizzes containing a combination of long-answer AND multiple choice questions as you won't be able to re-use the MCQs.

  16. Continue to review and mark the questions.

  17. Once you have marked all of the long answer questions, click Save at the bottom of the window. This saves the scores and feedback you just entered - it does not mark the whole quiz as graded.

  18. Your name will then be recorded next to each of the questions to indicate you have graded them.

  19. image

  20. Towards the top of the screen, you will see the Final Score change.

  21. You can enter overall feedback for the student's attempt at the top of the Attempt window. This can be made available with the final score without having to reveal anything else.

  22. Click Save again if you have entered overall feedback.

  23. If you wish to set an attempt as Graded as you mark it (and this has been approved by the Unit Chair) you can do so by placing tick the box under Graded (G) and clicking Save.

  24. If you are the only person marking (or don't mind flicking through multiple individual records) you can use the arrows at the top of the window to to navigate to the next attempt.

  25. If you are working in a marking team you may prefer to click Save and Close so you can search for and select a specific student attempt to mark.
