Preview a quiz to check its settings

One of the easiest ways to check a quiz and its settings is to run a preview - this enables you to undertake the quiz as a student will see it.

  1. Click on the drop-down arrow next to the quiz and select Preview.

  3. After you click Preview, this will launch the quiz as a student will see it.

  4. General restrictions will be bypassed by default during this process - meaning it will ignore restrictions that users are subject to such as conditional release, open/close dates and whether or not the quiz is active.

  5. Under Description a link to a help guide for students should appear. These details are added by HEDU to each quiz.

  6. Make sure you check the following under Quiz Details:
    1. The open date/time and close end date/time
    2. The number of minutes allowed for the attempt
    3. The number of attempts allowed.

  7. A Plagiarism and Collusion Statement and Declaration should appear on each quiz used for summative assessment. These details are added by HEDU to each quiz.

  9. Scroll down to the bottom of the page taking note of the Instructions for students along the way.

  10. Click Start Quiz!.

  11. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click OK.

  13. Ensure you preview the quiz at full screen so that all options are readily displayed.

  14. The next page will take a second or two to load and the timer will begin. Note:
    • If the quiz uses multiple randomised question sets you won’t be able to check all questions (HEDU can set something up for you if required)
    • If the quiz draws questions randomly they won’t appear in a set order e.g. Question 1 to Question 20.
    • Check image/table/figure/graph legibility and placement.
    • Check equation symbols and expressions etc.
    • Check that questions using answer options such as 'all of the above and 'none of the above' appear where they should and have not accidentally been randomised.
    • Check the number of questions displayed and their point value.

  15. Select and save some responses - you don't have to do all of them.

  17. Navigate to the bottom/end of the quiz and select Save All Responses and then Go To Submit Quiz.

  19. Run through ALL of the submission confirmation steps.

  20. Leave the following option un-ticked "Allow this preview attempt to be graded in the Grade Quiz area".

  22. The next page will show you what students see immediately after they submit their attempt. It will usually say something like 'Your quiz as been successfully submitted' and may also indicate to students when scores will be released

  23. You can switch to the view they will get after scores are released by using the drop-down field towards the top of the submission view screen (students don't get this drop-down, only staff do in Preview mode).

  24. View upon submission:

View of delayed results release (if used):

  25. If the quiz is formative and submission details have been released (such as how the student answered and the correct response) this information will be displayed here with the Attempt Score at the bottom of the window.

Typically these details aren't released for quizzes used for Summative assessment and so only an Attempt Score will be displayed at a set time after the overall quiz period has ended.

  26. Once done, click Exit Preview to end the process.
